Canadian Fruit and Vegetable Sales Rise

In 2012, fruit and vegetable sales by Canadian farmers increased 9.2% from 2011 to $1.7 billion.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Fruit sales were up 13.1% to $872 million and vegetables rose 5.4% to $847 million.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Carrots were the largest constituent of vegetables sales with a total of $92.5 million. Tomatoes came in second with $81.6 million, followed by sweet corn with $72 million, and cabbage with 62.5 million.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Cranberry sales increased 42.7% and blueberries rose 21.9% resulting from increased production.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Unseasonable weather conditions in spring hindered pollination in Eastern Canada and caused apple production to decline by 31.6% and peaches to take a 3.7% dive.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">More than 88% of vegetable and fruit sales were accounted for by farmers in Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia.</p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p><a class="btn btn-sm btn-primary col-lg-12" style="white-space: normal;" href="http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/130128/dq130128c-eng.htm"_new"> Canadian Government Statistics</a></p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">
