Yakima, WA

Domex Superfresh Growers is providing the industry with an apple update after a series of inclement weather events struck Washington state.

Until July 20th, Washington state expected to bring in its largest crop ever by a 20 million box margin, but hail reduced the crop to second largest ever. The official August estimate for the 2012 – 2013 Washington apple crop is 108.7 million boxes, which could vary by four to five million boxes depending on demand and how the market reacts to hail.

All apple varieties were affected by adverse weather, including Red Delicious and Gala. Due to this year’s excellent growing conditions beginning last fall, however, the fruit that wasn’t affected by hail is of top quality—large with ideal color and shape. Superfresh Growers will be striving to keep grocery shelves packed despite the fall in the U.S. crop, and with retail partners’ assistance, apples are slated to produce 16% of the fruit category’s dollars remain at the top of the category. The company also reports that harvest has officially begun on Ginger Gold and Gala apples.

Domex Superfresh Growers
