OXNARD, CA - Just 10 years ago, I wrote a Snack article titled The Mango Kings, with Gary Clevenger and Jesus “Chuy” Loza—the Managing Members and backbone of Freska Produce International. That title resonates just as much with me today as it did a decade ago. Whenever I think of the Freska team and the driving force behind its successful mango (and now avocado) program, their core tenets arise: strategic thinking, adaptability, and innovation. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary on Friday, August 23, 2024, the team is once again heading into an era of opportunity, all built upon its original founding vision.
“When we founded Freska Produce 20 years ago, we wanted to be the supplier that brings the freshest and best quality mangos and avocados to our customers, and our mission statement was set 20 years ago with that purpose,” Gary shares with me in the lead-up to the anniversary. “While our foundational values have changed, we continue to adapt to the changing marketplace, constantly anticipating the needs of our customers.”
Over the past two decades, Freska has evolved, moving from a top mango operation to one versed in fresh avocados as well.
“These categories continue to help build sales in the consumer basket,” Gary says. “In just mangos alone, we are one of the top distributors in the U.S. and the New Zealand, Australia, and Japan markets.”
Freska is a powerhouse of resources, offering a year-round supply of mangos and avocados, customer support, and market solutions. When I ask Gary what he would say are the biggest advantages of working with Freska as a customer? He takes a moment to distill the possibilities.
“Our year-round availability without a lot of holes truly ensures a surety of supply for our customers. We pride ourselves on relationships and protect our recurring business by providing excellent customer service,” Gary begins. “Understanding the market dynamics and keeping our customers updated is key, and we create opportunities for our customers constantly. We understand customer needs and preferences and help them solve those issues, creating loyal partners with excellent customer service. By leveraging these strategies, we increase our chances of success and turn them into opportunities.
With 20 years in the business, Gary has learned much about the game and the need to be proactive and nimble.
“Being flexible and adapting to change in the produce business is the secret to navigating the year-to-year differences—no year is exactly the same and understanding those dynamics is key to success. You have to be able to withstand the difficulties and changes in the circumstances of the produce business,” Gary reflects.
