Steven Shuman, General Manager and Vice President of Sales, G&R Farms

“It’s exactly what we love to see going into such a key food holiday,” Steven Shuman, General Manager and Vice President of Sales, comments. “Our Peruvian Sweet Onions are coming in clean, bright, and beautifully sized, with that signature mild, sweet flavor shoppers crave for holiday cooking.”

Through careful planning and adherence to quality-control standards, G&R Farms provides a steady, reliable supply that retailers can count on.

“We take pride in ensuring that every onion, from field to store shelf, meets the quality families expect for their Thanksgiving meals,” Steven adds. “Thanksgiving is one of the biggest ‘sweet onion holidays’ of the year because they’re such a go-to ingredient for stuffing, casseroles, gravies, salads, and veggie dishes.

For produce managers, he outlined a helpful list of strategies to make sweet onions sing.

  • Guide shoppers toward the right onion for the right job. Sweet onions, especially our Peruvian Sweet Onions, are perfect when they want mild flavor without the bite.
  • Recommend buying an extra onion or two. Many home cooks underestimate how many dishes call for them!
  • Storage tip for customers: Whole sweet onions keep best in a cool, dry place with plenty of airflow, but we do not recommend refrigeration. Be sure to store them away from your potatoes – the gases they exchange reduce their shelf life.
  • Prep tip: Encourage shoppers to slice or dice onions a day ahead and store them sealed in an airtight bag or container in the fridge -- it will take some pressure off on Thanksgiving day.

Retailers can also make a big impact by building secondary displays, keeping product fresh and rotated, and leaning into the origin story of sweet onions.

“Shoppers love knowing they’re buying from growers who care. Highlighting G&R Farms’ sustainability and long history in sweet onions builds trust and brand loyalty,” Steven says. “And they sell especially well when merchandised alongside holiday staples—think mushrooms, celery, fresh herbs, potatoes, and broth.”

Cherishing its ability to feed the nation during this holiday, G&R Farms also cherishes the tradition of gathering the entire team for a big meal at this time of year.

“One where sweet onions naturally make their way into nearly every dish,” Steven added. “It’s a moment to pause, give thanks for the harvest, and celebrate the people who help us bring Peruvian Sweet Onions to tables across the country. We also take pride in our tradition of giving back. Supporting our community is woven into who we are, and Thanksgiving serves as a reminder of the responsibility and joy that come with being part of something bigger than ourselves.”
