Grimmway Farms' Bob Borda Dials into the Current Potato Market
- by Anne Allen
BAKERSFIELD, CA - If consumers consider potatoes to be a wintertime staple only, snap them out of this preconceived notion with a potato program sure to knock their socks off. Grimmway Farms and its Cal-Organic Farms® brand have exactly the remedy to those who aren’t using potatoes in everything this summer, and buyers across the nation can dial into this summertime fervor. I tapped Bob Borda, Vice President of Sales, to learn more.
“Each year, Cal-Organic is one of the first growers to start new crop red and gold potatoes. Since the start of the season, our quality, supply, and demand have been exceptional,” Bob began. “"Our organic russet crop is now shipping and mild weather in Kern County through the spring season is resulting in good supplies across all varieties to meet both retail and wholesale demand.”
The market for organic red, gold, and specialty fingerling potatoes has been very active this season, a trend that will likely continue and result in strong sales over the following weeks.
“We’re anticipating an even stronger market for organic russet potatoes as this crop becomes available this month,” Bob shared with me. “And as a seasonal organic potato grower, Cal-Organic sees consistently high demand while our crops are in season. When adequate supplies are available, we enjoy working with our retail partners to promote the potato category and merchandise complementary commodities, including onions, carrots, and corn.”
It’s only a matter of time before consumers start piling in for potato options, so retailers, get stocked now!
