UNITED STATES - Since last October, when a $24.6 billion merger deal between Albertsons and Kroger was announced, the two entities have been working to alleviate antitrust concerns. Part of their strategy included plans to sell between 250–300 stores, which C&S Wholesale Grocers is now reportedly close to acquiring.
According to reporting from Reuters, C&S would announce a deal to acquire most or all of the stores as soon as this week. Since Ahold Delhaize decided to transition to self-distribution back in 2019, the cooperative has been looking for ways to bolster its portfolio through acquisitions.
If this deal comes to fruition, C&S will be backed by SoftBank Group, but the value and number of stores included in the transaction have not yet been revealed. The stores being sold could be worth more than $1 billion and are located across regions including the Pacific Northwest; Southern California; Phoenix, Arizona; and Chicago, Illinois.
