Cincinnati, OH

The Kroger Co. is helping to get the Summer started by utilizing its social media platform. The company's Facebook page features a host of ways to keep the season fresh and cool with fruit offerings, recipes, and education on ripeness selection.

Kroger is promoting the Bing cherry crop that has made its way onto the stores' produce shelves. Facebook content notes that the Summer fruit is best right now, and is a great source of nutrient-rich antioxidants. Kroger is also guiding cherry lovers on how to pick the best cherries. The company's suggestions include choosing a cherry that is dark, almost purple in color; plump and firm to the touch.

The retailer is also promoting its peach category by pairing it with a favorite Summer activity- grilling. Kroger suggests peach consumers get a little creative this Summer and throw them on the grill. Facebook offers a tasty Summer recipe of grilled peaches with cinnamon and sugar, topped with vanilla ice cream.

Watermelon is a Summer favorite and it is not going unnoticed. Promotional Facebook material states, "The official launch of summer is almost here, and you know what that means…watermelon!" Dull watermelons are best and odd bumps or curves are a good indicator of irregularities, according to the company's Facebook page. Also, pay attention to the “field spot” on the watermelon. This is the grainy patch where the watermelon was in contact with the growing surface. When it comes to the field spot, the deeper the color, the sweeter the taste. A spot that displays more yellow means it’s perfect, but a white patch is also perfectly fine.

The company is also sharing a unique recipe for watermelon lovers - Chilled Papaya and Watermelon Soup with Lemon Coriander Cream. The recipe link can be found on Kroger's Facebook page and connects consumers to the company's website.

The Kroger Co.
