Daniel F. “Bud” Roche, 85, retired co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Roche Brothers and Sudbury Farms Supermarkets and founder of Hans Kissle Salad Company, has passed away on September 4.

Together with his brother, Buddy Roche was only 24 when he founded Roche Bros., which had become one of the premier supermarket companies in New England with 16 stores, nearly 4,000 associates, and serving 300,000 customers a week. It had grown from a meat market with just the two brothers into the 7th largest food chain in New England, ultimately earning Buddy a spot in the Food Industry Hall of Fame in 1992.

Buddy was a firm believer in innovation and he was always looking for something new to impress his customers. For example, when he and his brother Pat were building their first Roche Bros. Supermarket, they put in a full service snack bar and had baggers bring the customers’ bags straight to their car. From then on, Roche Bros. Supermarket continued to blossom and grow into a quality store that showed just how much Buddy cared about his customers.

“From the very beginning it wasn’t luck,” Buddy once said. “I call it divine intervention that we bumped into the right people early on…that we are fortunate enough to have come with us. And have the same drive and desire and wanting to take care of the customers.”

Services for Buddy were held in St. Joseph Church, Needham, MA on September 10th. Donations in Buddy’s name may be made to Sacred Heart School, 1035 Canterbury St, Roslindale, MA 02131.

AndNowUKnow would like to extend our deepest condolences to Buddy's family and friends.
