<p> George William McKay Sr., former Supervalu President and CEO, has passed away at the age of 96.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> After serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, George became Vice President of Busley, a wholesale grocer, which later merged with Bluffton Grocery Co. in 1957 to form Food Marketing in 1963. This venture led George to move to Minneapolis to become Executive Vice President of Operations and eventually President and CEO of Supervalu in 1970. He served as Vice Chairman of the Board from 1973 to 1979. In 1980, he and Don Murphy opened the first Cub supermarket in Indianapolis, which led to two more Cub stores in Indianapolis and two in Toledo, two County Markets in Terre Haute, and seven Save a Lot grocery stores.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> George was an honored member of the NAWGA (National American Wholesale Grocery Association) board of directors for 20 years, including two terms as its Chairman and President. He was also an active part of S.C.O.R.E., an organization of retired businessmen who help those who want to start a business. He was elected to Fort Wayne’s Business Hall of Fame in 1988. In 2013, George was honored by United Way of Allen County for his 75 years of giving to the organization.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> George enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and fishing, and had many fond memories of trips with family and friends. He is survived by his three sons, two step-daughters, twelve grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> A memorial service will be held this Saturday at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 300 West Wayne St., Fort Wayne, IN, where he was a member for 81 years.
