Mexican production of Persian limes as well as lemons has plummeted in recent months, according to Alatorre Saul Mejia, President of the Citrus Product Systems.
Mejia noted that the same situation manifested last year. 28 kilograms of limes rose above 350 pesos, but due to the climate, it sold at between 35 and 40 pesos, which represented a significant loss in earnings.
Though the organization has sought government assistance at both the federal and state levels, it has not yet received aid, making the situation critical as they lack the resources to address the problems they are facing.
Mejia expects the price of limes to recover in the coming months, which would help the financial situation of producers in Persian lime-growing regions of Tuxtepec and Ayotzintepec.
He noted that they are exploring options to export the product, however, due to changes in government, they have not yet returned to shipping as many containers to the U.S. and the Netherlands as they have in the past.
