<p style="text-indent:0px; line-height:12px;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">Altamira, Mexico-</span><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">By ANUK Staff<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">2.14.13</p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p>50% of onion production generated the in Altamira region of Mexico is exported to the U.S., creating roughly 500 jobs for families from other states of the Mexican Republic during harvest time.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Director of Rural Development in the municipality of Altamira, Noé Haro Maya, stated that production of white, red, and yellow onions was too expensive therefore they were limited to production in a 600 hectare area.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Maya stated that they harvest close to 40 tons of onions per hectare and of these about 50% are exported to the United States, while the rest is left for domestic consumption.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">The vegetable harvest generates jobs for families in rural areas surrounding industrial cities, who reside in suburbs like Tres Marias, Villa Cuahtemoc, Esteros, Maclovio Herrera, and Tres de Mayo.
