With a record crop and summer excitement on the way, Domex Superfresh Growers is introducing new packaging and promotions. The company's Northwest cherry crop is progressing very nicely as the season moves closer, with many areas either just past or coming into full bloom. Currently, bloom is anywhere between 5-7 days earlier which would signal an anticipated June 1st start to the season.

"The first Bing peak would be around the 15th to the 25th of June and Rainiers would peak around June 28th for two weeks. What this means is a great promotional opportunity for July 4th ads. If Mother Nature participates, we could see a record crop of 25 million boxes!” Howard Nager, Vice President Marketing, tells AndNowUKnow.

Domex is offering new high graphic stand-up pouch bags for both dark sweet and Rainier cherries, to help retailers promote this year. In addition the company will be utilizing its social media channels to promote cherries to consumers.

Nager notes that when looking at NW cherry sales, there are three time periods to the season. June represents approximately 25% of the crop so it is important to kick off the season with a strong promotion.

For July, the company could see almost 50% of the crop being sold and recommends that 3 promotions during this strong month are ideal as cherries can represent up to 10% of fresh fruit sales and 7% of total produce department sales.

“July 4th has traditionally been the unofficial kick-off to summer with strong sales and promotional opportunities occurring during this holiday. In addition, July 11th is National Rainier Day with many activities and events planned. Cherries generate more July sales/square foot than any single produce item with over $155 sq./ft. August then concludes with the late season sales of approximately 25% of the crop and it is recommended to have at least one additional promotion during this month,” Nager continues.

It is important to continue promoting cherries throughout August as well to maximize sales during this month.

Retail opportunities include demos, secondary displays, increasing display space, in-store radio and communication through their own social media efforts and more.

“At Domex Superfresh Growers, we have found that the most successful programs start with planning and execution right now. Planning not only weekly volumes but, daily volumes. Planning when will the front page run, back page or inside page. The size of the display is probably the most important execution in maximizing your cherry program as cherries are the leader in sales/sq. ft." according to Nager.

Through their use of Facebook, Intsagram, Twitter and YouTube, Domex will be communicating to consumers the excitement and healthful benefits of eating cherries. Cherry lovers will be able to see videos of what occurs in the orchards both before and during harvest. The company will also be conducting a promotion via social media channels where consumers can win prizes by submitting photos of how they are enjoying eating cherries.

Domex Superfresh Growers
