<p><strong>Providence, RI</strong><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> UNFI has been recognized by Food Logistics as one of the Top 20 Green Providers of 2012. The publication is dedicated exclusively to the food and beverage supply chain. The award acknowledges companies whose product, service, or exemplary leadership is enhancing sustainability within industry, according to a press release. UNFI was selected by Food Logistics’ editorial staff and advisory board as an organization that has embraced sustainability practices as part of its daily business activities.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> These practices include achieving Gold LEED certified buildings in Lancaster, TX; York, PA; and Ridgefield, WA, as well as purchasing green power for 25 percent of its annual electricity usage in 7 of its facilities that are located in deregulated states. This has reduced 4,190 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. UNFI is also on track to reduce its carbon footprint by 5 percent by 2014. The company has tracking and monitoring systems to help meet the goal.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> United Natural Foods also utilizes it 65 GenDrive fuel cell powered lift trucks at its Sarasota, FL distribution facility. The project reduced 132 metric tons of CO2.
