NYC Advances Government-Run Grocery Store Plan with New Bronx Location

NEW YORK CITY, NY - New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced another location for the city’s planned network of government-run grocery stores, with the newest site set for the Bronx neighborhood of Hunts Point.

According to MSN, the location will be built at The Peninsula, a mixed-use development that will also include affordable housing and a health and wellness center. The grocery store is expected to open in 2027 and would become the first of the city’s five proposed municipally backed grocery locations.

“This store will be the first of the five city-run grocery stores to open,” Mamdani said. “Bronx residents will be able to begin shopping here next year.”

The planned 20,000-square-foot location is part of a broader initiative Mamdani has described as a “grand experiment” aimed at lowering grocery costs for consumers through city-supported operations. Under the proposal, the city would subsidize certain staple grocery items while private operators manage the stores under pricing guidelines intended to keep products more affordable.

The announcement comes as the city continues developing plans for grocery access and affordability across all five boroughs. Mamdani previously announced an East Harlem flagship location that is expected to open later in the decade.

The Bronx store will be developed on the former site of the Spofford Juvenile Detention Facility and is expected to become part of a larger redevelopment effort in Hunts Point.

The city has reportedly allocated approximately $70 million toward the five-store initiative.

As conversations around food access, pricing pressure, and urban grocery infrastructure continue across the industry, projects like this are likely to remain closely watched by retailers, wholesalers, and suppliers alike.
