UNITED STATES - As millions of Americans prepare for Fourth of July celebrations and holiday travel, a wide range of weather conditions is expected across the U.S., with extreme heat, scattered thunderstorms, and wildfire smoke creating challenges in many regions during one of the busiest weekends of the summer.
According to AccuWeather, a sprawling heat dome will keep much of the central and eastern U.S. running well above average for early July, with temperatures climbing into the 80s and 90s across much of the Midwest, South and East. Triple-digit heat is expected across portions of the Southwest, while the hottest conditions relative to normal are forecast across parts of the northern Rockies and interior West. The heat is expected to support strong demand for seasonal produce, including watermelon, grapes, berries, peaches, nectarines, corn and other cookout and picnic favorites.
At the same time, clusters of afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected to develop around the edge of the heat dome, stretching from parts of the Rockies and Plains into the Southeast and along much of the Atlantic Coast. While many areas will experience long stretches of dry weather, locally heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds could disrupt holiday travel, outdoor events and fireworks displays. Travelers may also encounter reduced visibility on roadways during periods of heavy rainfall.
Out West, hot, dry conditions continue to elevate wildfire concerns, particularly across the Great Basin, Intermountain West and portions of the Rockies. Smoke from active wildfires may reduce air quality and visibility locally while also drifting into other parts of the country.
Despite the unsettled pattern, much of the country is expected to experience favorable conditions for holiday gatherings. Retailers are likely to see continued demand for fresh summer produce as consumers prepare for backyard barbecues, picnics, and family celebrations throughout the extended holiday weekend.
