In Memoriam Joseph H. McCarthy Jr.

<p> Mr. Joseph H. McCarthy Jr., former Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, Inc. passed August 20, 2013, in Naples, FL. Joseph began his career in the food industry as a store manager with First National Supermarkets (Finast), the dominant food retailer in New England. He was promoted as Senior Vice President through various operations and merchandising positions.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> During his 30 years of service with Finast he was selected to represent the chain at the International Food Congress in 1955 and helped set up the first supermarket in Rome, Italy. In 1959, Joseph was selected to set up and manage the Finast located at Cross County Center, Yonkers, NY, the largest supermarket in Metro NY at the time. His accomplishments throughout his career include being named 1981 Man of the Year for the Catholic Institute of the Food Industry.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Joe was born in Derby, CT on December 21, 1921 to his father Joseph H. McCarthy and mother Katherine McCarthy (Feeley) and raised in Stamford, CT, Joe was awarded a football scholarship by Villanova University and graduated with a BS in Economics with a major in Marketing.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Mr. McCarthy is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean K. (Ryan) of Naples, FL and their five children, Timothy (Cynthia) McCarthy of Woodstock VT, Maureen McCarthy of NYC, Barbara (Gregory) Blue, Tampa FL, Richard McCarthy, of Naples FL and Joseph H. (Kimberly) McCarthy III of Kinnelon NJ, plus six grand children and two great grand children.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund.</p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">
