<p>Safeway has announced second quarter 2013 financial results highlighted by a 22% increase in income from continuing operations to $58.1 million.</p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p>Sales and other revenue declined 1.6% from $8.8 billion to $8.7 billion in the second quarter of 2013, primarily due to lower fuel sales in 2013 and the disposition of Genuardi's stores in 2012, partly offset by an identical-store sales (excluding fuel) increase of 1.2%. </p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p>Net income for the second quarter of 2013 was $8.4 million ($0.03 per diluted share). After adjusting for the items in continuing and discontinued operations outlined above, net income for the second quarter of 2013 rose from of $122.7 million ($0.51 per diluted share) to $125.1 million ($0.51 per diluted share).<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><img class="small-cropped-image" src="https://cdn.andnowuknow.com/legacySmallCroppedImages/Safeway_profits_july_2013_BODY.jpg" alt="Cropped Images July 18th 2013" />"We are pleased with the significant milestones we achieved this quarter," said Robert Edwards, President and CEO.
