Market Basket directors will meet behind closed doors on Thursday, potentially discussing changes that may occur for the grocery chain as the company’s employees continue to speculate what may happen to their popular CEO, Arthur T. Demoulas, and profit-sharing plan.

The Market Basket courtroom fight has recently heated up this summer, despite beginning two decades ago. According to Lowell Sun, the board of directors voted last month to hire an executive search firm, which analysts have said is a likely move toward replacing Demoulas, and approved a $300 million dividend to shareholders. Those and other votes have been very unpopular with a vocal contingent of employees because of their support for Arthur T. His cousin and rival on the board, Arthur S. and those affiliated with his side of the family have prioritized shareholder values and profits.

In addition to the meeting between Market Basket directors, there will be a preliminary injunction hearing in Suffolk Superior Court for a lawsuit filed by Arthur T. Demoulas. The head of the company has asked a judge to nullify board of directors votes in which director Keith Cowan voted in the majority, arguing that Cowan is not truly independent.

Cowan was originally aligned with the Arthur S. Demoulas side of the family before being elected as one of three independent directors, but Arthur T. is requesting that Cowan be removed from the board.

“If [Arthur T. Demoulas] is ousted after these meetings, the danger for the company is that the employees will become disgruntled and store managers unhappy and it will communicate to customers that the company is changing,” commented Daniel Korschun, an assistant marketing professor in the LeBow College of Business at Drexel University.

Stay tuned to AndNowUKnow as we continue our coverage on the Market Basket courtroom battles.

Lowell Sun

Market Basket
