As San Joaquin Valley growers prepare to make their transition down to the growing regions in Yuma and the Imperial Valley, they may be meeting some unseasonably cool temperatures along with strong winds. Gusts could reach up to 40-45 mph in South East California and Western Arizona today, with 30 mph elsewhere due to a Gulf of AK trough passing through the deserts, according to Terry Snow's Weather Service.

Wednesday morning may see light to moderate-heavy lettuce ice in eastern Yuma area valleys and Western AZ that may become light to moderate Thursday morning.

Growers tell AndNowUKnow that it is important to look at the amount of days, and more importantly the duration of each bout of frost. If they don't face the frost for extended periods the it won't be enough to cause major problems. The wind may be the bigger issue.

Strong winds may cause some windburn, discoloration and dehydration in the leafy items. But, growers note, they should be okay since most crops are still a couple weeks out from harvesting their first products in Yuma and there are only a couple days forecasted with the high wind and light frosts.

Next week could see temperatures in the desert regions cool to the mid to upper 60's with widespread moderate to heavy lettuce ice possible November 14 through the 15th.
