Walmart Canada Appoints Lee Tappenden as New CEO

MISSISSAUGA, ON – After holding a number of leadership positions within the company, Walmart has announced the promotion of its current Chief Operations Officer of Walmart Canada, Lee Tappenden, to the position of President and CEO for its Canadian operations.

"Together, we have seen significant growth of our business, including a focus on fresh food and investments in eCommerce. I look forward to leading the team as we embark on an exciting time for our business and for our customers."

The executive appointment will become effective on August 15 of this year. Tappenden will report directly to David Cheesewrite, President and Chief Executive Officer of Walmart International. According to TheStar.com, Tappenden will replace the company's current CEO Dirk Van den Berghe, who was appointed in 2014.

"Lee is extremely well-poised to lead Walmart Canada and continue the momentum of growth we are seeing in this market," said Cheesewright,. "He has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout his career with Walmart internationally, in both merchandising and operations, but he also brings to the role a real passion and heart for our associates and customers." 

Tappenden originally joined the Walmart team in 1996, before being appointed as Senior Vice President of Merchandise Operations in 2010. The Edmonton Journal also stated that Tappenden has served in global leadership roles, such as Chief Merchandising Officer of Walmart Japan, and Vice President for the International Division. Tappenden serves on the Board of Governors for the Children’s Miracle Network.

“Lee is the kind of person who genuinely cares about the well-being of the people who work in and shop at our stores every day – and that's one of the things that make him an incredibly special leader,” finished Cheesewright. 

In tandem with Tappenden’s appointment, comes the announcement of Bob Hakeem to fulfill the role of Chief Operations Officer. Hakeem currently serves as Chief Administrative Officer for Walmart Canada, and brings over 25 years of business experience to the role. Hakeem has served in executive positions with Walmart and has helped guide the company through major changes in the market, said the company.
