YERINGTON, NV - Born from the roots of a shared vision and a thriving partnership, The Nunes Company and Peri & Sons Farms have officially cut the ribbon on their new Walker River Cooling facility. With this new facility, the two companies will be able to produce more than 40 different conventional and over 35 different organic items across 3,500 acres together.
“This joint-venture is the culmination of our hard work, determination, and drive to bring a better product to market and allow us to further diversify our operations,” Tom M. Nunes (T5), Vice President of Operations of The Nunes Company, Inc., shares with me. “The new facility, Walker River Cooling, strategically positions us to build on the strengths of our individual companies and provide unrivaled service for our customers.”
With the sun soaked Nevada landscape as a perfect back drop for the day, The Nunes Company and Peri & Sons were joined by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval and federal, state, and community leaders to celebrate the facilities grand opening. Featured speakers included the Governor, as well as Tom Nunes V, and David Peri, Founder and President of Peri & Sons Farms.
The new facility, Walker River Cooling, opened in May, 2017, and services retailers, wholesalers, processors, and other buying organizations throughout North America.
Starting with 16 acres just eight years ago, the two companies will grow and ship more than 25 million pounds of organic baby greens and 40 million pounds of organic fresh vegetables this year. Nunes and Peri & Sons now collectively span eight generations, with more than 80 years of industry experience between them.
“Walker River Cooling is the only cooling facility of its kind in Nevada.” Tom added, “We are proud to bring this venture to the state. The combined operations of our two companies have brought over 800 jobs to Lyon County, with additional job growth as we look to the future.”
The event kicked off with the host of speakers and a ribbon cutting ceremony, along with a tour of the new state-of-the-art Walker River Cooling facility which is designed to provide efficiencies in the cooling and distribution of the produce.
“It is amazing how quickly our companies partnership took hold,” David Peri told me in a recent Snack article. “In 2009, we planted romaine for the Nunes team. I personally asked folks in the veg industry about the Nunes family and was told nothing but good things. I learned that their family was just like ours because we had the same level of integrity, and shared common core morale values. I just knew it would only be a matter of time before we would become the perfect partnership. For us, farming is personal and we have a passionate, hands-on approach to every aspect of growing, from the seed to the table. That shared vision is what has kept us thriving for almost a decade.”
