PORTERVILLE, CA - Just when you think you know what Homegrown Organic Farms is up to, the team turns around and achieves another outstanding move. Fresh on the heels of an array of milestones, including a company-wide rebrand, the company has revealed a new organic kiwifruit variety in its Homegrown Organic Farms one-stop-shop fruit lineup this fall.
“Adding kiwis to our organic offering was a natural next step as we work to continue to fulfill our buyer’s organic fruit needs,” CEO Scott Mabs stated. “We are excited to be on the cutting edge of variety development in such a unique category.”
Initial offerings will include bulk, 1 lb, and 3 lb clamshells. The company expects to begin shipping organic kiwis from Kingsburg, California, in November 2020.
The new kiwifruit addition is a jumbo variety developed in Greece and brought to the U.S. in 2010, according to a press release. Some enticing attributes include a nearly 50 percent larger than the common Hayward variety and a high nutritional value.
“We are pleased to be able to add this unique variety to our offerings,” Stephen Paul, Category Director, expressed. “As one of the most diverse organic fruit marketers in the industry, we are working hard to provide top-of-the-line varieties and this is no exception.”
An exciting history also accompanies the unique fruit. The farmers behind this new variety are Jerry Kliewer and his son Jerin. The Kliewer’s have partnered with the Greek breeders of this new variety and maintain the exclusive rights to the genetics in the U.S. Partnering with the Kleiwers, Homegrown is thrilled to bring this fantastic piece of fruit to its customer base.
What a summer we are in for as organic continues to vie for center-stage!
