GUATEMALA - Similar to trends we’ve seen in the United States, European consumers are increasingly seeking out new varieties of fresh produce. Countries like Guatemala have many different offerings to meet that demand, which Agexport Agricultural Sector showcased at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Germany. More than 40,000 visitors from 132 countries were in attendance.

Luis Fernando Teo, Leader of International Agricultural Pavilions, AGEXPORT“During 2021, 4.5 portions of fruits were consumed per person in the United Kingdom, this being the main country of consumption of these, followed by France and Spain. Due [to] this data [...], we see the importance of this fair for the agricultural sector and especially for fresh fruits and vegetables[.] it is like for more than 30 consecutive years we have raised the agricultural offer of Guatemala [sic],” commented the leader of International Agricultural Pavilions of Agexport Luis Fernando Teo.

Products on display included snow peas, sweet peas, French beans, mini vegetables, Rainbow carrots, Persian and dehydrated limes, rambutans, avocados, sweet potatoes, malanga, sweet cassava, plantains, and chayote. Data from the Agexport Market Intelligence Unit shows that as of December 2022, the products Guatemala exported the most to Europe were fresh or dried plantains, followed by green peas, chickpeas, and peas; macadamia nuts; avocados; and raspberries, blackberries, and mulberries.

The many changes of the past couple years have encouraged more consumers to lean toward a healthy and sustainable diet in Europe. A press release stated that this provides a unique opportunity for Guatemalan suppliers, as shoppers are looking for new flavors, health benefits, and packaging improvements.

“We have five companies belonging to the Agexport Agricultural Sector that will be at Fruit Logistica and that will surely be a good opportunity since products such as fresh fruit have 43 percent interest among buyers who attend, in addition to 28 percent of fresh vegetables. In the same way, the majority of visitors have leadership and management positions and at least 85 percent have positions related to acquisitions and purchases with power of decision,” added Teo.
