SALINAS, CA - As technology and convenience continues to create a new reality for the world at large, produce companies across the supply chain have stepped up to help others navigate this new reality without losing any momentum. One company that’s doing so in a way that’s tailor-made to fit the needs of each of its customers is Fresh Avenue.

I chatted with Mark Vaughan, Managing Partner, and Brian Rooney, Director of Supply Chain and Operations, to find out all the strategies Fresh Avenue drives forward to give its customers a leg up, no matter what.

Mark Vaughn, Managing Partner, Fresh Avenue“We’ve recently expanded the breadth of our company and reach,” Mark began. “We’ve also launched a consolidation program, which means we’re bringing in products from a multitude of providers to our facility and then palletizing, packing, wrapping, and even shipping it if that’s what the customer needs. Our goal is to get our customers out of one dock, instead of multiple, in order to reduce wait times, administrative costs, rescheduling issues, and unpredictability.”

Fresh Avenue works with its customers to tailor its services and products

On top of all of those benefits, Fresh Avenue’s consolidated logistics program also offers its customers the chance to tap into smaller, seasonal, and specialty products. In the past, offering these items typically meant an extra pick or dock, but Fresh Avenue has streamlined this process. As a result, smaller, seasonal, and specialty products can remain competitive in the market and customers along the supply chain don’t have to go off the beaten path to include these items in their portfolios.

Brian Rooney, Director of Supply Chain and Operations, Fresh Avenue“From a customer stand-point, this adds value to their supply chain, provides a unique competitive advantage, all the while furthering Fresh Avenue as a supply chain partner. By bundling produce offerings from different regions, we open up the grower community to new channels, offering the customer the opportunity to increase their product offering, and enhance the freshness, shelf life, and inventory turns on their existing product offering," Brian said. “From a logistics stand-point, there are a lot of constraints happening in transportation at the moment, which makes buyers adverse to trying something new from a smaller producer. We make it convenient to explore smaller and innovative products for all involved.”

Fresh Avenue is bringing in products from a multitude of providers to its facility and then palletizing, packing, wrapping, and shipping them

And like I mentioned before, Fresh Avenue works with its customers to tailor its services and products.

“We’re always coming up with new pack sizes that work well in a restaurant application. We want to get customized product into the market, and we try to leverage this as our key differentiator,” Mark continued. “We support our customers with a national sales team and work with distributors to troubleshoot and make product decisions. That was our original concept, and it will always be the heart of our business.”

WICHITA, KS; GREENSBORO, NC - Trader Joe’s has been steadily rising up the ranks of beloved retailers for years spurring further growth. 2019 has been a year of major expansion for Trader Joe’s, with the retailer opening up new stores in Little Rock, Arkansas; Miami Beach, Florida; Meridian, Idaho; Nashville, Tennessee; and Brookfield, Wisconsin. This expansion is just the tip of the retail iceberg, as the grocer has released further details about two new locations in Kansas and North Carolina.

Trader Joe’s has released more details on its upcoming North Carolina and Kansas stores

Trader Joe’s had previously announced its plans for a new store in Wichita, Kansas, but did not reveal the new location’s opening date. However, Wichita residents now have something to look forward to on October 11, as the store will open its doors for the first time at 9 a.m. The Wichita store is located in a former Fresh Market location, marking Trader Joe’s as a serious competitor in the retail space.

The grocer was more reticent about its upcoming Greensboro, North Carolina store, offering few details on its website, save for its address at 3721 Battleground Ave.

“We've consulted our maps and compass and have found a terrific location for a store in Greensboro, NC,” the website stated.

When will the Greensboro store finally open? And what region will Trader Joe’s target next? AndNowUKnow will keep you posted.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - SpartanNash has welcomed a strong addition to its produce leadership with Vic Savanello, who just joined the retailer as its new Regional Vice President of Produce and Floral Merchandising.

I had the opportunity to discuss this big next step with Vic, who shared a little insight on what’s to come.

Vic Savanello, Regional Vice President of Produce and Floral Merchandising, SpartanNash“In SpartanNash, I saw an organization with a topflight reputation and multifaceted business model, which I felt gave me an incredible opportunity to utilize my diverse background and career experiences. I look forward to being truly challenged and enjoying immense success as a part of SpartanNash’s produce team,” he said of the decision to sign on.

As part of what Vic tells me is the “marketing and merchandising center of excellence,” he will be responsible for supporting SpartanNash’s more than 155 company-owned retail stores, establishing and maintaining customer and vendor relations and satisfaction levels, negotiating national vendor contracts, and leading the fresh distribution procurement team and their processes.

SpartanNash has welcomed a strong addition to its produce leadership with Vic Savanello

“Together with the produce team, I’m hoping to continue to establish SpartanNash stores as the go-to produce destination in each of our retail markets, leading the way through innovation, variety, and value,” Vic shares. “At the same time, we want to help our independent retail customers compete and excel in the ever-evolving competitive landscape!”

In this new role, he will report directly to the Vice President of Fresh Merchandising, Jerry Goldsmith.

Jerry Goldsmith, Vice President of Fresh Merchandising, SpartanNash“Vic joins SpartanNash with many years of produce experience in all facets of the business,” Jerry said when I reached out about Vic’s joining the team.” With produce being such a key strategic focus for SpartanNash, we felt Vic’s experience would continue to elevate the business to best in class. We look forward to his contributions to the success of the organization.”

That experience includes two New Jersey-based retail cooperatives and, most recently, Vice President of Produce for The Fresh Market.

Vic will be responsible for supporting SpartanNash’s more than 155 company-owned retail stores

“My background working for two New Jersey-based retail cooperatives gives me a lot of insight into what the independent supermarket owner wants and prioritizes as keys to their business’ success. The two different models gave me a view from a self-distributed and then a third-party distributed model. Working with SpartanNash’s independent retail customers will not be foreign in the least to me; in fact, I am really looking forward to it,” Vic said of how his background will complement this new position. “But, at the same time, my recent experience at The Fresh Market gave me great insights into building programs, together with our operations team, which are designed to succeed at the store level! It’s the best of all possible produce distribution worlds, and I’m right in the thick of it! It’s going to be a lot of fun!”

In Vic, SpartanNash has clearly amplified not only its years of produce experience, but passion and enthusiasm as well. A big congratulations to both sides on this exciting new chapter!

WASHINGTON, DC - The United Fresh Produce Association Washington Conference has officially wrapped, bringing a multitude of industry leaders from every sector of fresh produce to the table in DC. With important issues ranging from trade and immigration to water, transportation, and beyond, the impact of the annual event is sure to ripple through the remainder of 2019 and into the new year.

Let’s take a quick look at the event by the numbers—with thanks to the United Fresh team—which reveals the magnitude of the conference and the industry’s investment in their relationships with their elected officials:

  • Participants marched on Capitol Hill for 216 visits with Congressmen and Senators.
  • Attendees represented 40 states and six countries.
  • 22 percent of attendees were first-time attendees to the Washington Conference.
  • Attendance was up by 23 percent over 2018.

John Hollay, Senior Director of Government Relations, United Fresh“Republicans and Democrats may not agree on much, but this week’s United Fresh Washington Conference demonstrated the power of a unified produce industry voice,” John Hollay, Senior Director, Government Relations, shared. “The bipartisan support for labor reforms for agriculture, trade, and the passage of USMCA, and further investments in our children’s future through our school nutrition programs is something that members of Congress from both sides of the aisle demonstrated they can agree on.”

With important issues ranging from trade and immigration to water, transportation, and beyond, the impact of the annual United Fresh Washington Conference will ripple through the industry throughout the year

Robert Guenther, Senior Vice President of Public Policy also expressed his thoughts on the successful conference.

Robert Guenther, Senior VP of Public Policy, United Fresh Produce Association“This week demonstrated the importance of meeting face to face with members of Congress and their staff as our elected officials determine which issues they must address in the next few months,” Guenther reflected. “The messages we, as an industry, delivered addressing our labor challenges, overcoming trade difficulties, and ensuring that children have access to fresh fruits and vegetables were almost unanimously well-received by Congress.”

Stefanie Katzman, President of S. Katzman Produce, also believes the event is truly worthwhile for everyone involved.

"Although it may be the convention that most people in the industry are the least aware of, it is really one of the most important. As we all know, there are certain things in the produce industry we have no control over, like the weather for example, but there are other key factors that affect our business, and it is important to make sure we are represented and have the opportunity to be heard," stated Katzman. "Those running our government and making these industry decisions on our behalf are in office to serve us, so it is our responsibility to let them know how they can best do that. United Fresh works year-round to represent us in Washington, and Robert does an amazing job for the industry, but he cannot do it alone, and the more support we can give, the better we will all benefit. Farm bills, trade laws, face-to-face meetings with congress, and educational sessions on what we can do and how we are affected are just some of the topics. And of course at like all conventions, it is another great opportunity to network."

Curious as to what more of our industry friends from Randy Giumarra to Lisa McNeece had to say? Check out the event in their words, here.

Thank you to all those who brought your voice to the Hill on behalf of the produce industry!

WASHINGTON, DC - This morning, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that it imposed sanctions on two produce businesses for failing to meet their contractual obligations to the produce sellers they purchased from and failing to pay reparation awards issued under the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act (PACA). These sanctions include suspending the businesses’ PACA licenses and barring the principal operators of the businesses from engaging in PACA-licensed business or other activities without approval from USDA. By issuing these penalties, USDA continues to enforce the prompt and full payment for produce while protecting the rights of sellers and buyers in the marketplace.

Direct from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service:

The following businesses and individuals are currently restricted from operating in the produce industry:

  • Harvest Soul LLC, operating out of Fairburn, Georgia, for failing to pay a $5,492 award in favor of a Florida seller. As of the issuance date of the reparation order, Kevin Quirk was listed as a member of the business.
  • Church Hill Farms and Logistics, operating out of York, Pennsylvania, for failing to pay a $1,063,529 award in favor of a California seller. As of the issuance date of the reparation order, Vincenzo F. Giuffrida was listed as the Officer, Director, and Major Stockholder of the business.

PACA provides an administrative forum to handle disputes involving produce transactions; this may result in USDA’s issuance of a reparation order that requires damages to be paid by those not meeting their contractual obligations in buying and selling fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables. USDA is required to suspend the license or impose sanctions on an unlicensed business that fails to pay PACA reparations awarded against it as well as impose restrictions against those principals determined to be responsibly connected to the business when the order is issued. Those individuals, including sole proprietors, partners, members, managers, officers, directors, or major stockholders, may not be employed by or affiliated with any PACA licensee without USDA approval.

The PACA Division, which is in the Fair Trade Practices Program in the Agricultural Marketing Service, regulates fair trading practices of produce businesses that are operating subject to PACA, including buyers, sellers, commission merchants, dealers, and brokers within the fruit and vegetable industry.

In the past three years, USDA resolved approximately 3,350 PACA claims involving more than $63 million. PACA staff also assisted more than 8,000 callers with issues valued at approximately $156 million. These are just two examples of how USDA continues to support the fruit and vegetable industry.
