“Peterson Farms Treats offers premium applesauce products to schools across the USA,” said Sarah Schlukebir, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of Peterson Farms. “Through this partnership with TerraCycle, Peterson Farms continues to grow by sticking to its founding commitments to sustainable business practices and the reduction of environmental impacts.”

The creative new initiative offers schools and households a convenient recycling solution for the pouches, which are not typically accepted through curbside recycling services.

Consumers can sign up on TerraCycle’s Peterson Farms Treats Applesauce Pouch Free Recycling Program page and mail in the packaging, a press release explained. After collection, the pouches are cleaned and separated by material type. The materials are then recycled into raw formats that can be used to make more products.

“The benefits of Peterson Farms’ recycling program are two-fold,” said Tom Szaky, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of TerraCycle. “The company isn’t simply offering a sustainable solution to keep applesauce pouches out of landfills. Peterson Farms is creating an opportunity for students to learn about the value in recycling packaging from snacks they consume every day at school.”

Schools and households can also earn recycling rewards for every shipment sent in through TerraCycle, which can be redeemed in the form of a donation to a school or charity of their choice.

This strategic move is part of Peterson Farms’ commitment to minimizing the impact of its activities on the environment through resource management, supporting regulatory compliance, and other policies concerning environmental issues.

TAMPA, FL - The ANUK ship has officially touched down back at our headquarters in Sacramento, California, but our minds are still in Tampa, Florida, as we reflect on the thousands of exciting developments on display at the 2024 Southern Exposure. When I set foot on the floor for my first-ever Southeast Produce Council (SEPC) show, my expectations were more than exceeded.

Decked out in camouflage attire, our industry took to a buzzing event filled with opportunities, perspective-shifting insights, and more. With more than 3,400 attendees and over 700 registered buyers, growth opportunities were abundant as fresh produce aficionados gathered to honor our industry’s Unseen Heroes.

“What a great event! Just when one thinks last year can't be topped, the SEPC team does it again and continues to raise the bar,” Tim Graas, Produce Buyer for Associated Wholesale Grocers and Past Chairman of the SEPC Board, reflected. “Both educational sessions were top-notch, and to have Kurt Warner as the keynote speaker was nothing short of amazing. From a business perspective, we were able to gain many new prospects and opportunities and see some new items that are sure to lead to additional sales. Hats off to the SEPC once again for a job well done!”

The event kicked off on Thursday, March 7, with the Tom Page Golf Classic at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club, welcoming show attendees for a day of friendly competition and networking.

SMP Southeast Marketing stood out as the champs of this year's golf event.

During the Keynote brunch, Kurt Warner took the stage with Adam Mendler to discuss determination, consistency, and the importance of practice

The following Friday brought us a day of perceptive education sessions—including The Hero Effect, featuring motivational speaker and author Kevin Brown, and The Power of Produce 2024, featuring FMI’s Rick Stein and Anne-Marie Roerink of 210 Analytics. Made possible by the Southeast Produce Council and Yerecic Label, this year’s Power of Produce report uncovered the importance of driving impulse purchases, as well as the value of displays and in-stock items.

“Southern Exposure 2024 exemplified industry excellence with record attendee turnout, insightful education sessions, and a vibrant show floor," remarked Kristin Yerecic Scott, Executive Vice President of Customer Experience and Administration for Yerecic Label. "The unveiling of FMI’s Power of Produce research report is always highly anticipated, and this year's session exceeded expectations. Anne-Marie Roerink from 210 Analytics provided attendees with industry-leading insights while Rick Stein of FMI led our panel of all-star buyers through valuable discussions, setting a new standard for industry engagement."

These advantageous sessions were followed by the Southern Roots Luncheon, STARS Fresh Futures, Next Generation Leadership Academy Networking Session, the Retail & Foodservice Reception, and more.

With a focus on women in the industry, this year's Southern Roots Luncheon featured speaker Kristen Hadeed, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Human Leadership Program.

The night concluded with an Opening Gala packed with industry expertise and the chance to take home some serious cash from the costume contest, in line with the Unseen Heroes theme. Snagging the cash prize with their creative costumes was:

  • Kim Flores with Pro Citrus Network
  • Madison Hopper with Equifruit
  • Yoli Santacruz and Franky Verdecia with Capro, Inc.
  • Brittney Potter and Nicole Stovicek with PrimusLabs/Azzule Systems

“The theme of this year’s Southeast Produce Council’s Southern Exposure being Unseen Heroes is something that is very important to me, and I am so glad we recognized the heroes on the first three feet and the last three feet of our industry,” added Mike Roberts, Vice President of Produce Operations, Harps Food Stores and Chairman of the Board for SEPC. “The camouflage theme along with speakers Kevin Brown and the Keynote speaker Kurt Warner were great ways to celebrate the unseen heroes this year! What a great show!”

On Saturday, attendees enjoyed that inspiring Keynote Brunch Mike spoke of with celebrity speaker Kurt Warner, former NFL quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, as well as Platform Point Speaker and Keynote Moderator Adam Mendler. Warner invigorated attendees with his discussion about determination, consistency, and the importance of "practicing how you want to play."

The SEPC also took a moment to honor Faye Westfall with the Terry Vorhees Lifetime Achievement Award, lauding her for her spectacular impact on the fresh produce space.

With more than 3,400 attendees and over 700 registered buyers, growth opportunities were abundant on the show floor

The remainder of the day was spent exploring an impressive show floor during the exposition, which welcomed attendees with the Bright Ideas Fresh Arrivals showcase and a variety of innovation stations.

Showing off their creativity, multiple companies were awarded for their impressive booth designs, with Jim Rash, John Greene Logistics Company, and RPE taking home prizes for the booth decorating contest.

Also awarded for Best Themed Directory Ad were King Fresh Produce, Titan Farms, and John Greene Logistics Company.

Overall, the event served as the epicenter for industry connection, innovation, and partnership, successfully bridging the gap between the supply-side and the buy-side.

Jeff Cady, Vice President of Produce and Floral, Northeast Shared Services

“Not only do I look forward to the Southern Exposure event every year, but it's also the can't-miss show of the year, in my opinion. While it is always great to leave the Buffalo weather behind for a few days, the benefits of this show were much more robust,” said Jeff Cady, Northeast Shared Services' Vice President of Produce and Floral. “The opportunities to network, see new products, have productive, thought-provoking conversations about how to grow the produce business, and visit with old friends were plentiful as usual. The event put me in a perfect state of mind to be productive and work on building relationships with new and current partners.”

Kim Andreason, Produce Program Coordinator, Jason's Deli, also shared her words and enthusiasm with me.

"Southern Exposure 2024 exceeded expectations! Kristen Hadeed, Kurt Warner, and Kevin Brown delivered engaging and well-received sessions. Interacting with emerging leaders from both the Stars and Step Upp groups was a rewarding experience, highlighting a promising pool of talent for the future of our industry," Kim expressed. "The exhibition hall buzzed with activity, and reconnecting with industry partners and friends is always a delightful aspect. I eagerly anticipate what Southern Innovations in Nashville will bring."

It’s safe to say there was not a single dull moment during SEPC’s eventful Southern Exposure show, and our team left electrified with inspiration and excitement for all our industry has in store.

Until next time, fresh produce friends! You can bet our calendars are already marked for Southern Innovations in September.

IMMOKALEE, FL - March is Women’s History Month, and as you know, our all-female writing team will surely be celebrating. It’s an opportunity to give even more recognition to the wonderful women who elevate the fresh produce industry every day. One such woman is Elyse Lipman, Chief Executive Officer of Lipman Family Farms.

Elyse Lipman, Chief Executive Officer, Lipman Family Farms

“Women's History Month is an excellent opportunity to shine a spotlight on the achievements of women in agriculture,” she began telling me in a recent interview. “As a fourth-generation family member of Lipman Family Farms, my journey has been shaped by the values instilled by our multiple generations of family members and employees, and their commitment to creating a workplace that values diversity. I grew with the stories of my great-grandfather Max’s ambitions, but also those of my great-grandmother Ella—the first ‘investor’ in Lipman. Ella managed the family’s finances, saving pennies and who shared with Max the dream of pursuing starting their own business. It's crucial to have a supportive environment that recognizes and nurtures the talents of everyone’s contribution.”

As Elyse noted, “There have always been women positively impacting the industry, but there’s a notable shift with now more women assuming leadership roles and contributing to innovation.”

Elyse Lipman grew up with the stories of her great-grandfather Max’s ambitions, but also those of her great-grandmother Ella—the first ‘investor’ in Lipman Family Farms

She added that creating opportunities for women to thrive and fostering an environment that values their skills and perspectives is essential. Women have always been a huge part of ag, and it’s great to see more of their stories being highlighted as the industry evolves.

“At Lipman, we have an ongoing ‘Women of Lipman’ group,” she said. “We look to organize events, webinars, and mentorship programs to showcase women's accomplishments, share experiences, and inspire the next generation. Creating spaces for dialogue and recognition is crucial, fostering an environment where women's achievements are acknowledged and celebrated.”

The Women of Lipman program is a testament to the company’s commitment to this foundational pillar of supporting and advancing women. It goes beyond external events and conferences, focusing on creating a supportive workplace culture where women can thrive, develop leadership skills, and contribute significantly to Lipman Family Farms' continued success.

As Chief Executive Officer of Lipman, Elyse has certainly earned her stripes. Everyone in the industry could learn a thing or two from this industry stalwart, and they certainly will at a couple of upcoming events.

Women’s History Month is an opportunity to give even more recognition to the wonderful women who elevate the fresh produce industry every day

“I'm honored to be a featured speaker at the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association's Women’s Day event this month. This event, held on International Women’s Day, will be a gathering dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of women in the Florida agriculture and produce industry,” Elyse explained. “I'll also participate in a panel at the International Fresh Produce Association’s Women's Fresh Perspectives Conference in April. This conference provides a platform for industry leaders to share insights, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities for women in the dynamic world of fresh produce.”

We could go on and on about the contributions women have made to this industry, and we certainly plan to as this celebratory month gets underway. Stick with ANUK for more Women’s History Month coverage.

MILLEN, GA - The Southeast Produce Council’s (SEPC) Southern Exposure is officially underway! During today’s education session, the association will unveil the highly anticipated Food Industry Association’s (FMI) Power of Produce 2024 report, authored by 210 Analytics and made possible by SEPC and Yerecic Label.

David Sherrod, President, Southeast Produce Council

“As we enter our sixth year of partnership with FMI, SEPC is excited to provide our highly recognized educational sessions as the platform for launch of the Power of Produce 2024 report,” said David Sherrod, SEPC President. “Navigating through the economic outlook for the next twelve months, we recognize that the traits of a great produce department go hand-in-hand with growing sales and consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables. As we honor the Unseen Heroes during Southern Exposure, we salute not only the men and women who serve in camouflage, but also the men and women who serve our industry by plowing fields, harvesting crops, sorting produce, loading trucks, stocking shelves, and prepping meals.”

According to a press release, the report showed that 89 percent of consumers make unplanned produce purchases, which highlights the effect that merchandising has on shopper purchases.

Mike Roberts, Vice President of Produce Operations, Harps Food Stores, and Chairman, Southeast Produce Council

“Adding panelist insights from our Unseen Heroes to the Power of Produce data helps bring the study findings to life," said Mike Roberts, SEPC Chairman. “Session panelists provided valuable context to this information highlighting how they use cross merchandising, eye-catching displays, or seasonal items to drive impulse. This highlights the crucial role of those working behind the scenes to bring fresh produce to our tables."

This year’s report found that 54 percent of purchases resulting from out-of-stock items or poor displays lead customers to go to a different store, forgo the purchase entirely, or opt for the frozen/canned version.

During today’s education session, the association will unveil the highly anticipated Food Industry Association’s (FMI) Power of Produce 2024 report

“In produce, the eyes decide,” said Sherrod. “Best-in-class fresh produce operations not only result in above-average sales and margins for the department, but also helps the store be a destination to win trips and generate sales across all other departments.

Attendees can expect to gain valuable insights from the Power of Produce report, empowering them to make informed decisions and drive growth in their businesses.

Stay tuned as we continue to cover the event from the show floor.
