SAN FRANCISCO - Continuing to streamline operations with the goal of strengthening retailers’ fresh business, Afresh is bolstering its suite of industry solutions. Earlier this month, the innovator announced the launch of its latest platform expansion: Fresh Buying. Bringing AI-powered precision to the center of the fresh supply chain, Afresh’s Fresh Buying service enables DC buyers to react quickly to inventory issues, ensuring they ship only the freshest produce to stores.

As the Fresh Buying platform introduces a new model for produce, meat, deli, and bakery buyers, I spoke with Matt Schwartz, Afresh's Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, to learn more about the innovative solution.

When announcing the launch of Fresh Buying, Afresh noted that “buying for highly perishable items at the distribution center is one of the most complex, high-stakes jobs in grocery.” What makes this process so dynamic?

Matt Schwartz, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Afresh
Matt Schwartz, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Afresh

“Buying fresh food is dramatically more complex than buying shelf-stable products. You’re not just forecasting demand—you’re managing seasonality, quality, and perishability all at once. A produce buyer might source from multiple growers with different contracts, prices, and regions, each facing its own unique weather and crop variability. Unlike buying Cheerios, purchasing strawberries is a dynamic, real-time decision that requires in-depth expertise and ongoing adjustments.”

How does the new Fresh Buying platform help ease this challenge for retail buyers?

“With Fresh Buying, we’re bringing the power of modern AI to this challenge. Our solution provides buyers with a single, intelligent workspace that automates routine tasks and enables them to focus their attention on the most impactful decisions—how much to buy, from whom, and when to ship for strategic commodities, as well as streamlined workflows for special situations like quality rejections, late trucks, and opportunistic buys. That frees them to focus on what truly drives value: building relationships with growers and delivering the freshest products to stores with minimal waste.”

What has the response been like from Afresh’s retail partners?

“We’re thrilled by the response to Fresh Buying—in addition to Wakefern, ShopRite, Price Rite Market Place, and The Fresh Grocer, we have another major grocer already signed and multiple others live with our DC-level Forecasting capabilities, including Albertsons. We’re seeing incredible enthusiasm from retailers who want to modernize how fresh moves through their supply chains.”

What other services and capabilities set Afresh apart as a partner in the fresh produce space? What advantages can a retailer expect to see when working with Afresh?

“Most enterprise systems cover maybe 10 percent of a fresh buyer’s job—they do demand forecasting and write a PO. Afresh was built for the other 90 percent: managing unexpected inventory, promotions, truck allocations, and vendor complexity. Our AI doesn’t just forecast—it orchestrates—determining what’s routine, automating it, and surfacing the few decisions that truly move margin. And because we’re end-to-end—from store operations to DC buying—teams act from one unified source of truth, keeping fresh products moving seamlessly from supplier to shelf.

When a grocer runs on Afresh, you can see the impact immediately—higher freshness, lower shrink, and stronger margins. Fresh buyers make hundreds of judgment calls every week, and three bad buys can turn into a seven-figure mistake. Our AI helps prevent those misses before they happen, so every decision—from vendor choice to truck build—moves the business forward.”

As more retailers leverage Afresh’s innovative portfolio to enhance their fresh departments, ANUK will be here to deliver the latest industry updates, so stay tuned!

MCALLEN, TX - Fox Packaging has introduced flexible packaging options featuring up to 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, reinforcing its commitment to circular and sustainable packaging solutions.

PCR content gives existing plastic a second life, helping reduce landfill waste and reliance on virgin resin. In the fresh produce industry, incorporating PCR into flexible packaging supports circularity by closing the loop between material recovery and new product manufacturing without sacrificing performance.

Available across select Poly, Combo, and Stand-Up Pouch structures, these PCR options come in opaque and clear films and in 1 lb to 10 lb sizes. The Fox Poly and Fox Fresh Mesh Combo bags; popular for potatoes, oranges, limes, and lemons, can now incorporate PCR within the base film component.

Iliana Csanyi, Sustainability Manager, Fox Packaging

“Adding PCR content is one of the clearest ways brands can show measurable movement toward circularity,” said Iliana Csanyi, Sustainability Manager at Fox Packaging, in the recent release. “Our approach pairs verified PCR content with the technical support and documentation customers need, from visual appearance targets to barrier considerations and performance.”

Each PCR film structure developed by Fox undergoes rigorous testing for strength, seal integrity, and print quality to ensure the same dependable performance as virgin materials. Fox’s R&D and quality teams validate that all materials meet comparable performance and packaging standards before commercial production.

Aaron Fox, Vice President, Fox Packaging and President, Fox Solutions

“As brands work to meet retailer and consumer expectations on sustainability, quality shouldn’t be compromised. Our bags stay strong, even with up to 30% PCR. With 60+ years in the packaging industry, we guide the practical choices that matter, from contact clarity by commodity, clear film for citrus, more cover for potatoes, to planning for PCR pricing and lead times. The result is reliable recycled content without compromising performance.” said Aaron Fox, Vice President, Fox Packaging.

Because PCR supply can be tighter than virgin resin, customers should plan for forecasted lead times; PCR films typically average about 15% higher in cost than comparable virgin films, depending on grade and market conditions. Industry demand continues to accelerate as brands and retailers set measurable recycled-content targets and enhance sustainability reporting.

While PCR content supports circularity and reduces reliance on virgin resin, it does present a visual tradeoff: the material may have slightly less clarity than virgin film due to the variability of recycled feedstock. Fox Packaging works closely with its resin suppliers and customers to balance sustainability targets with performance and appearance expectations, ensuring that every structure meets the product’s visual and protective needs.

Fox Packaging has introduced flexible packaging options featuring up to 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, reinforcing its commitment to circular and sustainable packaging solutions

“Our goal is to make sustainability practical,” added Fox. “As more retailers and suppliers work toward measurable sustainability metrics, Fox Packaging will continue expanding PCR options and exploring material innovations that support true circularity in fresh produce packaging.”

For each PCR order, Fox maintains supplier PCR declarations, incoming material inspection records, and production traceability linking resin lots to finished goods. Documentation is available upon request.

UNITED STATES - Something strange is brewing way above our heads, and it’s coming from a place most of us never think about—the stratosphere. Meteorologists at USAToday say the atmosphere is sitting at a “critical juncture,” and what happens in the next few weeks could completely change how winter unfolds.

La Niña is already in play, quietly nudging weather patterns across the Pacific. But now? A possible sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event—one of the rarest atmospheric twists we get. And when these two collide, the season can take a sharp left turn.

Climatologist Judah Cohen describes this setup like a "fork in the road." If the upper atmosphere warms fast enough, it can shove the polar vortex off balance and push cold air south. And not just a little cold; stratospheric warming events can shake loose Arctic air that drops temperatures and ramps up snow across huge swaths of the country.

La Niña may coincide with a possible sudden stratospheric warming event—one of the rarest atmospheric twists we get
La Niña may coincide with a possible sudden stratospheric warming event—one of the rarest atmospheric twists we get

A November SSW hasn’t happened once in the satellite era, meaning if it hits, it’ll be the first of its kind since modern records began. The last time we saw anything like this was the late 1950s and 60s. Will that upper-air disruption actually reach the ground? If the vortex connects cleanly with the jet stream, we’re talking a colder, potentially snow-heavier stretch beginning in December and sliding into early January. If that connection fizzles, the country could stay milder than expected, and winter may never fully come.

Either way, the stage is set for one of the most uncertain winter forecasts we’ve had in years. And as always, the atmosphere will make the final call.

For the latest updates as this unfolds, keep checking ANUK.

OXNARD, CA - Recently, Gary Clevenger and I spoke about the strength of its tropical program. Next, we dive into where consumer demand is headed, how investing in sustainability continues to give the supplier an edge, and where it sees itself in 2026.

Gary Clevenger, Managing Partner, Freska Produce International

“Consumers are looking for great-tasting fruit, minimal ingredients, and food they can feel good about, and that’s where our focus is,” Gary, Managing Partner, shares with me. “Fresh mangos and avocados continue to anchor our lineup—both categories built on strong consumer loyalty and versatility—but we’re also seeing exciting growth in naturally dried mango and dragon fruit.”

Dragon fruit is a strong addition to the produce department due to its visual appeal and ability to drive new shoppers to the category. It’s also a favored ingredient in smoothies and fruit bowls and can be enjoyed just as well on its own.

Consumers are looking for great-tasting fruit, minimal ingredients, and food they can feel good about, and that’s where Freska Produce International's focus is

To deliver on the fruit it’s known for, Freska’s focus is simple: consistent quality, dependable supply, and building programs that help its customers grow right alongside it.

“We installed a solar power system at our Nogales, Arizona, facility, which now helps power our cooling and packing operations,” Gary notes. “It’s a meaningful step toward reducing our carbon footprint and running more responsibly. Between our renewable energy, efficient irrigation, reduced waste, and vertically integrated trucking operations, we’re creating a supply chain that’s faster, cleaner, and more sustainable—without compromising on quality.”

To deliver on the fruit it’s known for, Freska Produce International's focus is simple: consistent quality, dependable supply, and building programs that help its customers grow right alongside it

The emphasis on quality and supply chain transparency will continue into 2026 as Gary offers me a brief glimpse of the final months of 2025.

“As of late October, Brazil is wrapping up, Ecuador is ramping up, and Peruvian Kent mangos will start shipping in late November. The fruit looks excellent—strong color, great flavor, and promotable pricing heading into the holidays,” he says. "
With steady avocado supply from Mexico and California, and expanding programs in mangos, dragon fruit, and dried mango, I’d say that Freska Produce International is well-positioned for a strong 2026.

CHELAN, WA - The conversation around sustainable packaging continues to evolve—and for Chelan Fresh, that means listening closely to what consumers want.

Mac Riggan, Vice President of Sales and Business Development, Chelan Fresh

“We launched the new eco tray as an answer to consumers wanting an organic pack that was not plastic,” shared Mac Riggan, Vice President of Sales and Business Development at Chelan Fresh. “Something that was close to biodegradable but definitely post-consumer recyclable.”

The eco tray is made entirely of cardboard and designed with both sustainability and practicality in mind. The 4-count pack showcases apples ranging from 88 to 100 size—a sweet spot for shoppers seeking snack-friendly fruit that fits their lifestyle.

“Consumers told us that’s the size they like to snack with. It’s not too big. It’s not too small,” Riggan explained. “The varieties we’re highlighting right now are organic Gala, Fuji, Granny, and Honeycrisp.”

As the company continues to innovate, its focus remains on variety and presentation.

Chelan Fresh’s eco tray aligns with rising consumer demand for sustainable, functional packaging that doesn’t sacrifice quality or convenience—a direction that continues to define the evolution of premium produce offerings

“We’re also going to be rolling out our organic SugarBee, and then we also have our red-flesh apples with the organic Lucy Rose,” Riggan added. “We’ll also be highlighting the organic Cosmic Crisp in both large and small-size formats.”

Chelan Fresh’s eco tray aligns with rising consumer demand for sustainable, functional packaging that doesn’t sacrifice quality or convenience—a direction that continues to define the evolution of premium produce offerings.
