WORLDWIDE - It’s almost a cliche at this point to say that American consumers want their fresh produce to be as sustainable as possible. When it comes to packaging, they expect the same. A recent breakthrough from HUID, a biotech startup, is allowing for a particularly ingenious solution to take shape.
HUID Founder and Chief Executive Officer Renuka Ramanujam transformed onion skins into compostable packaging. According to a BBC report, the skins contain antimicrobial properties, which help ensure food stays fresh.
One of the reasons Ramanujam chose onions is that they are a staple in every cuisine around the world.
Although the prototype is not yet ready for commercial use, the potential to eliminate billions of pounds of plastic will quite literally be at our backdoor when this sort of tech hits the market.
