UNITED STATES – A new ALS challenge is sizzling through the nation, and with a fresh produce category taking center stage in the new campaign raising awareness to #EndALS, many in our industry are stepping up for a good cause. “Eat a hot pepper; stop ALS cold” is the latest call to those with the most resilient palates to eat a scorching pepper and live to tell the tale.

Can your taste buds withstand flavors as hot as the sun? Do you thrive off of diving headfirst into the unknown? When asked about your spice tolerance, do you respond: the limit does not exist? Then, prove it!

Habanero Peppers

The challenge is on, and we hope to hear from companies far and wide brave enough to put their tongues to the test: just send your video to [email protected]!

The team at Bailey Farms, a family-operated U.S. grower-shipper of specialty peppers, has already completed the task and is challenging their friends in the industry to do the same.

We caught up with Randy Bailey, President of Bailey Farms, to get more deets on the challenge we can’t wait to accept.

Randy Bailey, President, Bailey Farms“We learned about the challenge through watching videos on the internet of others participating and felt as pepper growers, it was a natural fit. We’re very committed to giving back and this is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in a great cause,” Randy tells me.

After Randy Bailey, Tony Terry, and Paul Strasser took huge bites out of a habanero, a Thai chili pepper, and a green jalapeño, respectively, they then challenged Ashley Rawl from WP Rawl, Callum McLachlan from Sy Katz Produce, and Tony Ragusa from Original Chicago Produce.

“Our industry as a whole is a generous one, and the cause behind ALS.net is making good progress in working towards a cure for what continues to be an underfunded issue. Along with being a very giving industry, we’re also very creative in sharing our passion for produce. The ALS Hot Pepper Challenge is the perfect opportunity for us to do both,” Randy continues.

ANUK is challenging the produce industry to see if they can take the heat. Send the ANUK team your ALS Hot Pepper Challenge videos to support the cause. Or, if spice is not your life, save your tongue and donate here.
