Baloian Farms' Jeremy Lane Discusses Tight Bell Pepper Market and Weather Challenges

Tue. April 26th, 2022 - by Peggy Packer

FRESNO, CA - As a distinguished supplier of bell peppers, as well as a bevy of other offerings, Baloian Farms knows what it takes to make the most of category sales, even amidst challenging conditions. As weather hurdles contribute to a tight market, I recently spoke with Sales Manager Jeremy Lane to discuss some of the factors impacting supply and demand.

Jeremy Lane, Sales Manager, Baloian Farms“Overall supplies are strained,” Jeremy begins. “Mainland Mexico production is wrapping up quickly, especially on retail grade packs. Meanwhile, East Coast supplies are incredibly light this time of year due to significant weather events that have occurred in key growing areas over the course of the last few months. California’s 2022 spring harvest has begun, however, overall acreage is less this year.”

With weather challenges such as frost, hail, strong winds, and rain impacting many East Coast growing regions, bell pepper production has been affected. Western regions have also experienced challenging weather, with strong wind and cooler temps.

With fewer supplies contributing to an elevated market and higher pricing, Jeremy explains that market conditions will likely remain elevated until overall supply conditions are improved, given that demand remains static.

The supplier will begin harvesting California Red Peppers around the middle of May, with Chili peppers, beans, zucchini, yellow squash, and cucumbers coming soon.

“Baloian Farms is projected to have excellent quality with healthy production the month of May,” Jeremy points out. “We will be at the ready to help retailers back their promotions with fresh green bell pepper supplies. California’s spring harvest is a first pick from fresh fields, and the finished packs show it. Excellent shape, color, size, and condition are currently being experienced.”
