Dockworkers have been on strike since last week at the Port of San Antonio, Chile, and now police special forces have intervened, according to uchile.cl. The police did not enter, but mobilized to allow non-striking staff to resume work at the international terminal there. There are conflicting reports about what is going on, but certainly the demonstrations are persisting and work has been greatly impeded by the strikes. Union representatives claim that the government has not honored a recent agreement, due to the stubbornness of the company Ultraport and their unwillingness to negotiate.

The second week of the strike would jeopardize the export of an estimated 1.5 million boxes of fresh fruit, worth an estimated $40 million, according to Fedefruta. Additional losses are expected if the dispute remains unresolved. By January 17, when the Far East market increases their demand for Chilean fresh fruit, the estimate grows to 2.5 million boxes, worth about $65 million.

"The longer the conflict, the more criticism return the situation to us as producers / exporters, since in February he sailed over six million cases per week, which would be catastrophic losses for fruit industry this season has no choice but to get the most out of your production severely diminished by frost September," says the president of Fedefruta, Cristián Allendes. "We also call on the government, authorities and judiciary, to enforce the order, the institutions and the rule of law. A minority group without legal reasons is killing the country."

In a meeting held by the workers, the Christian leader Ogaz of Sitraport Union, said that "this is war, there is nothing else to do."

Indianapolis Business Journal

uchile.cl
