GOODLETTSVILLE, TN - Wielding the ongoing success of its United States growth strategy, Dollar General (DG) has revealed new plans to take its operations south of the border. Recently, the retailer announced the company’s first-ever international expansion spurred by the anticipated opening of 10 stores in Mexico in 2022. Building on its evolution, DG has also unveiled a blueprint for the addition of fresh produce to over 1,000 new stores in the States.
“The opportunity to expand our footprint to serve communities in Mexico marks an exciting new era for our organization and is a reflection of our continued innovative spirit and dedication to serving others,” said Todd Vasos, Chief Executive Officer. “We are excited to bring to the Mexican consumer the value and convenience that our U.S. customers trust us to provide, and we are confident in our ability to provide Mexican households with affordable access to everyday essentials.”
Like its U.S. counterparts, the planned Mexico locations are expected to offer a specially curated assortment of products that consumers often use such as food, fresh goods, and more. According to a recent blog post, the new locations will also bring retail career opportunities to the communities in which the stores are located as well as opening at the DG’s Mexico Store Support Center.
Additional details surrounding the Mexico expansion, including specific store locations, career opportunities, merchandise assortment, branding, and more, are expected to be released at a later date.
“We are taking what makes DG great in the U.S. and adapting it to the Mexican retail landscape and feel strongly that our unique proposition will resonate with the Mexican consumer,” added Jeff Owen, Chief Operating Officer. “We look forward to customers’ response to our new stores and laying the foundation for future growth in Mexico.”
Complementing DG’s international expansion, in a recent earnings call reported by The Motley Fool, the retailer announced that it will be opening a myriad of new stores Stateside as well as extending its fresh produce offerings.
“For 2022, we plan to execute 2,980 real estate projects in total, including 1,110 new stores, 1,750 remodels, and 120 store relocations,” said Owen. “We also plan to add produce to approximately 1,000 additional stores next year with the goal of ultimately expanding this offering to a total of up to 10,000 stores over time.”
Currently, DG operates more than 18,000 stores across 46 states in the continental U.S., with approximately 75 percent of the nation’s population living within five miles of one of its stores. The retailer expects to open stores in Idaho in early 2022, which will mark its 47th state.
