SANTA MARIA, CA - Let’s talk Brussels sprouts. A beloved offering for many consumers, the category holds various opportunities for driving sales and uplifting the produce department’s overall basket share. With lower volumes coming out of Mexico and domestic production beginning to ramp up, I got the low-down on the state of the Brussels sprout market from Gold Coast Packing’s Marketing Coordinator Crystal Chavez.

Crystal Chavez, Marketing Coordinator, Gold Coast Packing“The Brussels sprouts market is currently steady, but there may be a bit of pressure due to poor quality and low volume coming out of Mexico. That is not expected to last long as the United States season starts up and more acreage is available. Better quality and volume are being seen for the U.S. product and is expected as the season continues to get underway,” Crystal divulges.

Gold Coast’s portfolio includes both retail and foodservice packs of Brussels sprouts year-round. For retail, the supplier offers 2 lb and 12 oz whole Brussels sprout packs. For foodservice, Gold Coast supplies whole, halved, and shredded Brussels sprouts in a variety of pack sizes ranging from 2 lbs to 5 lbs.

Better quality and volume are being seen for the U.S. product and is expected as the season continues to get underway

Currently, as Crystal notes, the category is seeing average pricing for this time of year, with prices ranging from $24–$26. Retailers can prepare for the category to see a spike in demand as we near the fall months of September and October.
