Houweling’s California grown Signature Heirloom and Medley tomatoes are growing in popularity this winter while the majority of production in these fast growing varietal segments shift to imported and mostly field production.

David Bell, Chief Marketing Officer, tells AndNowUKnow, “Retailers such as Whole Foods in Southern California have been really excited to have fresh, locally grown specialty tomatoes at a time when their customers find it harder and harder to buy local.”

Houweling’s Heirloom and Medley programs were first harvested in the spring of 2013 within its Camarillo, CA farm. The company’s Heirloom varietal count started at over forty, and throughout the season its R&D team was able to hand select the best performing varieties that deliver on the nostalgic heirloom flavors consumers crave.

Available in packaged and bulk formats, Houweling’s has seen retailers merchandise these items side by side capturing greater consumer attention. Currently included in its mix are Cherokee Purple, Cour de Boef, Cauralina, Black Crim, Carumba, Marmande, Rebelski, Beorange and more.

Bell continues, “Our Signature Medley stands alone when stacked up against the competition. The combination of unique flavors, shapes, sizes and colors, it continues to delight foodies at retail and develop a following within the foodservice sector where Local is king.”

Houweling's
