Legend Produce Founder Pat Tucker Announces Retirement After 27 Years of Leadership and Legacy; Barry Zwillinger Comments

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - After more than a quarter century of building one of the most respected commercial melon operations in the country, Pat Tucker, co-founder of Legend Produce, has announced his retirement from day-to-day operations.

Tucker founded Legend Produce in 1999 alongside business partners Barry Zwillinger and Jack Cancellieri with a vision grounded in hard work, respect, integrity, and meaningful relationships. Over the past 27 years, that vision has grown into a year-round melon-centered operation with production in key regions including Arizona, California, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Tucker’s work ethic was shaped long before Legend Produce began. At just nine years old, he worked alongside his grandfather on the family farm in Litchfield AZ, earning $0.15 per hour during long, hot days that forged both his character and his belief in perseverance. By age 15, he was stocking shelves at a local retailer, quickly demonstrating the value, reliability, and discipline that would later define his leadership style.

Known affectionately as a true cowboy of the produce industry, Tucker consistently credits the company’s success not to acreage or expansion, but to its people.

“The key to making a company successful is the connections you develop with people,” Tucker said in the recent release. “Remembering their names, their kids’ names, special dates — when people become family, you build support for the challenging times. It takes a family to raise a child, and a family to grow a business as well.”

Throughout his career, Tucker prioritized relationships above all else. When reflecting on his proudest accomplishments, he points not to milestones or growth statistics, but to the lasting connections he has built. Fourteen children have been named after him — only three of whom are family members — a tribute that reflects the deep respect he has earned across the industry and community he so proudly serves and represents to this day.

Tucker is also quick to credit his wife, Debbie Tucker, who will celebrate 50 years of marriage with him this April. “She is the rock and the foundation,” Tucker said. “Her support and strength allowed me to grow this company year after year.”

As he begins this next chapter, Tucker looks forward to adventures beyond produce fields — strengthening his sea legs on tropical cruises, exploring destinations such as Martha’s Vineyard, and completing a long-held bucket-list goal of celebrating Christmas in all 50 states. With 37 already completed, 13 remain. Just as important, he looks forward to spending more time with his two daughters and four grandchildren.

“Family and connections are what remain as you age,” Tucker reflected.

While stepping away from daily operations, Tucker’s presence and influence will remain integral to Legend Produce’s future. He will stay involved with Legend Produce in a consultancy role while also serving on the California Cantaloupe Advisory Board and Research Committee.

“Pat’s legacy remains in every part of Legend Produce’s success,” said Zwillinger. “I wish him and Debbie happiness as they begin this new journey. His leadership, character, and commitment to people have shaped who we are as a company, and that impact will carry on for years to come.”
