CHICAGO, IL - Midwest Foods, Chicago’s women-owned, locally and family-operated produce distributor, proudly announces that Alex Frantz, Director of Local & Sustainability, has been recognized as one of Crain’s Chicago Business’ Notable Leaders in Sustainability (see article here). Selected by Crain’s editorial team, the honor celebrates leaders whose efforts are driving measurable environmental and social impact across industries.
For the past six years, Frantz has led Midwest Foods’ local and sustainability programs, strengthening supply chain resilience while advancing responsible sourcing and sustainable business practices. Her work connects farmers with chefs and institutions to grow a values-driven food system, while spearheading waste reduction and impact storytelling initiatives that align with client goals.
One of her standout achievements has been expanding Midwest Foods’ local sourcing program, which has helped growers increase revenue, adopt sustainable practices, and build long-term business viability. The program has supported diverse and women-owned farms, fostered next-generation farmers, and reinforced the Midwest food economy.
“I’m truly honored to be recognized by Crain’s alongside so many inspiring Chicago leaders who are driving meaningful change in our communities. Ultimately this recognition is a reflection of the collective work happening across our region to make food systems more sustainable and resilient. At Midwest Foods, we see sustainability as both an environmental and a community commitment—supporting local farmers, reducing waste, and helping our partners make choices that are better for people and the planet. I’m proud to be part of a team and a network that’s turning those values into action,” said Alex Frantz, Director of Local & Sustainability, Midwest Foods, in the recent release.
In addition to her leadership role at Midwest Foods, Frantz serves as Vice Chair of Chicago’s Green City Market, Co-Chair of the Metro Chicago Good Food Purchasing Initiative Steering Council, and as a member of multiple regional and national sustainability councils, furthering her influence across the broader food system.
This recognition follows Midwest Foods’ announcement earlier this fall that it is the second food distributor in the country to join the U.S. Food Waste Pact (see announcement here), a joint initiative led by nonprofits ReFED and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to reduce food waste throughout the supply chain.
Erin Fitzgerald, President and Owner of Midwest Foods, praised the honor, “Alex’s passion and expertise are woven into the DNA of Midwest Foods. She not only builds strong partnerships with local farms but also drives the systems-level change our industry needs to tackle climate challenges and food insecurity. Her leadership is a key reason Midwest Foods is seen as a pioneer in sustainability.”
Frantz holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Villanova University and has over 12 years’ experience in the food and sustainability sector. She recently graduated from the International Fresh Produce Association’s Emerging Leaders Program, a competitive, year-long program developing high-potential leaders in the fresh produce and floral industries.
Crain’s “Notable Leaders in Sustainability” issue was released on November 10, 2025, featuring profiles of honorees selected for their professional achievements, community contributions, and lasting impact on sustainability in Chicago and beyond.
