<p> The new requirement for weekly testing of irrigation water is being reconsidered, relieving the fears of many onion growers in the Northwest.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> Federal regulators had initially set in place a requirement for weekly testing of irrigation water, which would effectively shut off irrigation water during the growing season. They say few farmers using ditch irrigation would meet the standards, and the standards wouldn’t add much to food safety, according to Daily Journal.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> Michael Taylor, FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods, said that the agency believes that “significant changes will be needed in key provisions of the two proposed rules affecting small and large farmers.”<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> Growers are now looking forward to the newly proposed rules in the summer.
