Safeway is announcing that its stores raised $14.5 million this past October for breast cancer research. In the course of the last eleven years, Safeway and its nearly 1,700 store family has raised more than $108 million for breast cancer research with projects in North America's top cancer centers research and in the areas of early detection and patient care. Larree Renda, Executive Vice President of Safeway and Chair of the Safeway Foundation states, "We continue to be humbled by the generosity of our customers and the commitment our employees have for the cause." She continues, "This kind of fundraising outcome will have a real and measurable impact on the science of finding a cure." Safeway raises funds for research by providing customers with opportunities to donate at each check stand, and at special in-store fundraising events to encourage support.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"> UCSF's Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center is one recipient of donations from Safeway's campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness and has joined forces with the company to launch BreastCancerTrials.org. The site provides the only online matching service specifically for breast cancer in the U.S., that allows patients to locate trials tailored to their situations with information for over 500 trials at more than 1,500 facilities. Safeway's campaign also supports Athena Breast Health Network, a partnership between the five University of California medical centers, the UCSF Institute for Health Policy Studies, and the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley. The network's goal is to revolutionize breast cancer research and care.
