As Dulcinea kicks off its harvest of mini and full size melons out of Southern Mexico and Northern Mexico, the company is also teasing a new, upcoming watermelon variety coming this summer.

“We are trialing a new exciting watermelon variety popular in Europe,” John McGuigan, General Manager, tells AndNowUKnow. “We are excited to do an introductory pre-commercial launch starting out of Yuma in June. We think this variety is an excellent addition to the Dulcinea portfolio and has the flavor profile consumers will absolutely love. More to come as we get closer to closer to harvest!”

So far, Dulcinea is seeing good conditions out of Northern Mexico with promotional volumes coming into Nogales on both PureHeart minis and Ruby Bliss full size watermelons. Yuma production looks great for its core products as well, including PureHeart, Ruby Bliss, and Tuscan Cantaloupes.

While the winter has proved challenging in Southern Mexico, Dulcinea’s harvest is in full swing and the outlook looks good. “Our outlook on the mini watermelons and the full size seedless marketing looks strong for the summer due to continued consumer demand so we’ve focused on having promotable volumes for our customers,” Monique McLaws, Marketing Director, tells us. “We increased our overall volumes this summer on watermelons and will continue to promote the Tuscan cantaloupe out of Yuma and San Joaquin Valley.”

Minis will continue to be the focus for promotions in the melon category until the end of June, toward the beginning of July. As domestic production ramps up, Monique tells us that there will be more promotions on the full size. “We’ve got a good supply during the summer months for both our PureHeart and Ruby Bliss watermelons,” she says.

It’s going to be a great season for melons this summer!

Dulcinea
