J&C Tropicals has kicked off its "Locally Grown Tropicals" program in Homestead, Florida. The company will be offering dragon fruit, star fruit, passion fruit, mamey, and avocado this season. The industry has seen a growing trend for the tropical fruit category and J&C has watched consumer demand rise, especially during the last year. Retailer interest in the category has grown and the company's sales are up at least twenty percent over last year across the dragon, star and passion fruit categories as well as mamey and avocados.

"There are more retailers getting on-board," Adrian Capote, Owner and VP of Sales, tells AndNowUKnow. "We are also providing high graphic POS for our customers that tailors to the specific demographics of their given region. It's our job to ensure that our retail partners get the best value out of our fruit."

Weather has been temperamental this Summer, especially during the month of July for several growing regions on the East Coast and South East. "Rain has been quite the challenge this past month, having some affect on avocados and dragon fruit, but mostly it has prevented us from getting into the fields to harvest. Dragon fruit needs much more sunlight to mature than what we had in July, so the crop has been delayed by a couple weeks but we are looking to get back on track as August gets underway." The season typically begins in July and runs into September or October.

J&C Tropicals
