ORLANDO, FL - It’s getting berry flavorful over at Mastronardi Produce®/SUNSET® as the greenhouse grower is putting the spotlight on its WOW® Berries. To get the lowdown on the lineup, I made a pit stop at the company’s booth at the International Fresh Produce Association’s (IFPA) Global Produce & Floral Show.
“They’re grown closer to home, so there’s less food miles; they’re virtually pesticide-free, so they’re better for the environment; and they use less land and water, so they’re more sustainable,” says Karan Kohli, Director of Berry Sales. “Our greenhouse strawberries are available from the fall to the spring, so mainly October to April/May.”
As the popularity of greenhouse-grown berries continues to rise, SUNSET is planning on launching its new angelberry™ and moonberry™ varieties in 2023.
To prepare for this launch and to meet rising demand, the grower is expanding its operations and is offering a wide array of options for each berry lover in shoppers’ households.
“Consumers should be able to buy multiple berries in one trip,” Karan adds. “Each variety has a unique flavor profile, so a different family member might enjoy a different variety. We just added over 60 acres, and we’re well over a hundred acres.”
