With a high brix, thin rind, small cavity and great flavor, the Origami is a top sought-after melon, according to a press release.

"The advantage of the Origami is that it gives a cross between a long shelf life and western shipper to bring in that high flavor, high brix aroma," Barry Zwillinger of Legend Produce tells AndNowUKnow. "We're starting domestic melons in the month of April, which is catching people by surprise. Maybe once in 30 years we've picked this early. We're still harvesting in Guatemala and Honduras."

Over the past four years, Legend Produce has been growing the Origami, increasing acreage every year due to its overwhelming success. This year, Legend has dedicated a majority of its production to the Origami cantaloupe.

"We chose to purchase the exclusive rights to the Origami cantaloupe from Harris Moran Seed Company because of our extremely successful results over the past few years with retailers, food service and processor outlets," states Zwillinger. "We are excited to be able to share this amazing new variety on a larger scale."

The Origami cantaloupe will be available from April through October. Domestic harvesting of the melons will continue through the Spring, with production coming from their desert locations. Summer will move production to the San Joaquin Valley, with Fall production returning to the desert.

Legend Produce
