CANADA - I think it’s safe to say that every company in this industry is working to become more sustainable, but there’s a difference between talking the talk and walking the walk. Canadian-based grocer Loblaw is one of the latter, pursuing an ambitious goal to ensure a 30-percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2023. While there are still many variables for the retailer to consider, it is conducting extensive research in order to exhaust all options—even some that are still being developed, according to trucknews.com.

As of late, this mission has primarily focused on options for a more sustainable transportation system. The news source reported that Loblaw was one of the first companies in Canada to pre-order Tesla Semi trucks, even before the production dates were finalized. The company is also looking at transportation providers Freightliner and BYD to develop sustainable pre-production trucks. Aside from that, Loblaw has even studied solar-powered trailers and battery-electric tractors.

While all of this has the potential to change our industry, many of the details are still hypotheticals. For example, the news source noted that this equipment has yet to be tested within the harsh conditions of a Canadian winter. Additionally, companies will need to sort out how they will go about powering this new fleet. However, Loblaw is confident that it is the perfect company to conduct this test as its tight-knit web of distribution centers will fall within the strict operating ranges of an early generation electric truck.

It looks as though Loblaw will have its hands full this decade! As technology, transportation, and grocery continue to intersect, AndNowUKnow will keep you up to date.
