Sambrailo Packaging’s Sara Lozano Discusses Readycycle® Expansion in Berries

WATSONVILLE, CA - Sambrailo Packaging is expanding its Readycycle® sustainable packaging line into berries, positioning the category as a prime opportunity to reduce plastic while responding to evolving consumer expectations around sustainability.

Sara Lozano, Sambrailo Packaging's Director of Marketing and Product Development, provides the details. "We're super excited to continue expansion in several categories, including berries, for our sustainable packaging line, Readycycle," Lozano says in the video.

"The expansion comes from more consumer minds, driving sustainable packaging, reducing plastic in the produce section in general. Berries can be a very special category to do that with, so I think there's always excitement around that category, and it's exciting to see the change.”

The Readycycle platform is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing operations, allowing packers and retailers to adopt paperboard formats without disrupting established logistics or merchandising systems.

The line is built to mirror the sizes and logistics of traditional PET clamshells, allowing packers and retailers to transition to paperboard without changing master trays or palletization. The familiarity is intentional, designed to remove friction from adoption while improving end-of-life outcomes for packaging in the produce aisle.

“With our Readycycle Packaging, what we did is we took existing sizes of classic PET clamshells that we've been in forever. It's in the same master tray. It palletizes the same,” Lozano said.

Beyond operational consistency, the paperboard format is meant to be intuitive for shoppers, clearly signaling how the package should be handled after use and reinforcing the broader sustainability message.

“With paperboard, it's an intuitive product that people know what to do with at the end of its life,” she added, noting that the material avoids the long-term persistence associated with plastic, “whether it gets recycled and turned into a new product or if it gets landfilled.”

By maintaining familiar sizes and palletization while transitioning to paperboard, the provider is positioning Readycycle as an accessible path toward more sustainable berry packaging.
