TEXAS - The South Texas Onion Committee (STOC) is calling on the Texas onion industry as it seeks new producer and handler nominees for District 1 (Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley) and District 2 (Uvalde-Wintergarden region). As the organization seeks to bolster its membership, the committee is encouraging the industry to consider candidates of all ages and genders to participate.
“The STOC plays an important role in ensuring producers and handlers get the best price for their products. We are always looking for new industry members to sit on the committee, keeping the energy level high and bringing new ideas,” commented STOC Manager, Dante Galeazzi.
The STOC has scheduled a nomination meeting for District 1 and 2 on Tuesday, February 28, via Zoom, according to a press release, to which the Texas onion industry is invited to attend.
Steve Cargil, onion grower and current Chairman of the STOC, also commented, noting a need for industry participation and explaining how Texas onions are inspected for consistent grade and size standards.
“I would like to encourage the Texas onion industry to get involved,” said Cargil. “Without enforceable standards, the STOC ensures the best Texas onions are sent to market and thus ensures the best possible price for all of our growers. Plus, the marketing undertaken by STOC is to the benefit of Texas onion growers and shippers. If you have ideas on how you think Texas onion marketing should be shaped, being a part of this committee is crucial.”
