WASHINGTON, DC - With the pandemic continuing to cause fluctuations and shifts in the retail market, United Fresh Produce Association has released its Q2 2021 issue of FreshFacts® on Retail sponsored by Mucci Farms. It aims to shed light on how these changes are affecting the produce department and how buyers can adjust their approach to capitalize on consumer trends.

Miriam Wolk, Vice President of Member Services, United Fresh Produce Association“A year-and-a-half into the pandemic, the new norm continues to evolve in response to changing dynamics,” said Miriam Wolk, Vice President of Member Services. “Future growth opportunities lie in understanding consumers’ changing behaviors and leveraging this knowledge to cater to their diverging needs.”

The report not only measures retail price and sale trends for the top ten fruit and vegetable commodities, but also takes a broader look at Q2 2021 category performance data, according to a press release. For this issue, seasonal category deep dives include bananas, broccoli, cherries, onions, and salad kits with a year-to-year comparison of the last three years’ Q4 results to help plan for a successful Q4 2021.

Highlights from the Q2 2021 issue of FreshFacts on Retail include:

  • Despite volume sales losses, six out of the top 10 fruit categories grew dollars as prices increase
  • Value-added fruit continues to grow, rebounding from declines of the recent past
  • Quarterly sales of organic produce top $2.3 billion, with fruit driving the growth
  • Salad kits continue to grow, accounting for over three out of 10 dollars in packaged salads
