Today, I am bringing you some of the category and weather news from around the industry. Check back twice weekly to see where the rain is falling, the sun is shining, and everything in between.
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNINGS THROUGH THE WEEKEND
The majority of the Midwest and Northeast of the U.S. will experience their first major heat wave of the summer this weekend. In the map below, locations in red will experience an Excessive Heat Warning for this weekend. The combination of excessive heat and humidity will lead to heat indexes of well above 100° and even approaching 110°.
In orange are areas susceptible to a heat advisory. Warnings are more dangerous than a watch but above averages temperatures nonetheless.
There are numerous growing regions and commodities all throughout this huge swath of area. Please review the Weathermelon App for specific commodities and locations that will be affected.
This heat should break on Monday or Tuesday depending on location. Expect high temperatures to drop by an average of 10° from one day to the next once the heat wave breaks.
MORE FREEZING TEMPERATURES AND RAIN FOR CITRUS REGIONS OF CHILE
For those of you dealing with citrus out of Chile, please be aware the forecast is for freezing minimum temperatures and rain this upcoming Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. The storm will hit Sunday with up to .50” of rain across all growing regions and possibly higher in isolated areas. Minimum temperatures for Sunday through Tuesday night are forecasted between 28° to 33° depending on location and day. Maximum temperatures for these three days will be in the 40°s and low 50°s.
This could affect harvests.
PERFECT WEATHER FOR VINE-RIPE TOMATOES OUT OF MEXICO AND SAN DIEGO
Right now, the main shade house growing regions in Mexico, as well as Oceanside Pole in San Diego County, are experiencing perfect weather.
On the eastern side of Mexico in the region of Torreon, Coahuila—which is a major summer region for shade house veg—steady temperatures rule the day with highs in the 90°s and lows in the low 70°s and no chance of rain. Expect quality and volumes to be good.
On the west coast of Mexico in the San Quintín region of Baja California, they are also experiencing ideal growing conditions. Maximum temperatures will be in the mid- to upper 70°s for the next 10 days and minimum temperatures will be in the mid- to upper 60°s. There is no chance of moisture in the 10-day forecast.
Oceanside Pole tomatoes grown in Oceanside, California, will see temperatures warming over the next 10 days. Today’s maximum temperature for the area will be 73° with a minimum temperature of 62°. By next Tuesday, expect the maximum temperature to be 80° and a minimum of 68°. As this area is just starting its season, look for these warmer temperaturs to really bring on production. Quality should be excellent.
TWO STORMS IN THE PACIFIC NOT EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL
There are two storms out in the Pacific, both of which are heading out to sea away from the Mexico coast. There is nothing brewing in the Atlantic for at least the next 48 hours.

For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude:
A tropical wave located several hundred miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico, continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions are forecast to become more conducive for gradual development during the weekend, and a tropical depression could form early next week. This disturbance is forecast to move westward to west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph, away from the coast of Mexico.
