ONTARIO, CANADA - With so many different packaging options on the market, clarity is key when it comes to communicating the advantages and benefits of each one. The Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) has ventured to provide this clarity for industry members, recently releasing nine new design rules for plastic packaging tailored to the fresh produce sector.

Ron Lemaire, President, Canadian Produce Marketing Association“Navigating the process of developing sustainable packaging can be complicated and challenging,” Ron Lemaire, CPMA President, commented in regard to the new packaging guidelines. “This new tool has been developed to enable produce companies within our supply chain to make decisions specific to their business.”

CPMA has been actively supporting initiatives that aim to reduce plastic waste, increase recycling, and transition toward a circular economy for plastics in Canada, a press release stated. In 2019, the association created a Plastics Packaging Working Group to address the use of plastics within the produce sector. The Association is also a partner of the Canada Plastics Pact (CPP).

With the support of partners including CPMA, CPP released Golden Design Rules for Plastics Packaging in 2021, which have provided the framework for CPMA’s produce plastic packaging rules. The new rules aim to provide guidance to reduce the environmental impacts of packaging. They are voluntary and will be updated on a regular basis.
