Innovator Casey Houweling has successfully secured worldwide patents for his Ultra-Clima® Semi-Closed Greenhouse. In 2006, the North American greenhouse pioneer and innovator started developing a semi-closed greenhouse that would provide superior climate control and yield, specifically in response to the warm dry climate of Southern California.
As the Ultra-Clima project progressed with Houweling’s trusted supply partners, Casey realized there were additional sustainability benefits that could be realized with the integration of heat capture and solar technology, according to a press release.
“I’m most excited about the future that Ultra-Clima creates. We are no longer limited to specific areas for year-round production. Ultra-Clima allows for local, consistent, year-round supply that consumers and retailers desire.” notes Houweling.
The company has been focused on protecting this system with patents obtained in the Netherlands, Canada, Israel, the European Union, Australia, New Zealand and as of last week the United States, since inception of the first two phases of Ultra-Clima were built at Houweling’s Tomatoes in California eight years ago.
Patent applications have also been filed in Mexico, Turkey, Russia and the Middle East.
KUBO Sustainable Greenhouse Projects has been marketing the Ultra-Clima® system with great success since 2007 and holds the exclusive worldwide rights to market, sell and manufacture Ultra-Clima®. Currently KUBO has built 23 Ultra-Clima® greenhouses for 16 customers across the globe, covering a total of 147 hectares so far.
