Domex Superfresh Growers® Show Pink Lady® Apples Some Love with Promotion for Valentine's Day
- by Jessica Donnel
YAKIMA, WA - There aren't many of my favorite “romantic” foods that can’t be made sweeter with the delicious crunch of an apple, and for this upcoming Valentine’s Day, you’ll be catching me munching down on my cheese and wine with a delightfully-hued Pink Lady® apple. Perfect for the holiday’s merchandising opportunities, the Pink Lady is the apple of choice for Domex Superfresh Growers’ February Valentine’s Day promotion.
According to a press release, Pink Lady apples, also known as Cripps Pink, are one of the rising stars of the apple industry. Superfresh Growers® shared that the variety has steadily held sixth place among top nationwide apples. IRI category data also showed that Pink Lady is up 3.4 percent in dollars versus last year, and up 8 percent in volume.
With romance in the air, the blush pink skin of Pink lady apples gives retailers a flurry of cross promotion opportunities, not to mention their bright sweet-tart flavor with hints of honey and butter, and subtle acidic finish. Superfresh Growers suggested pairing the apple with savory ingredients, such as onion, chili, pink peppercorns, and cheese. Among cheeses, the company suggests pairing with milder types, such as Monterey Jack, and creamy cheeses, such as Boursin. And for your wine pairing? Choose a Rosé wine, known for bright fruity flavors.
Not only is the Pink Lady is a rising star, for the apple industry, at Superfresh Growers, Pink Lady is slated for more than 50 percent growth for both organic and conventional over the next five years. The company provides the variety year-round in both 2lb organic pouch bags and 3lb conventional pouch bags.
