The Kroger company recently announced the unveiling of a new energy production system which converts food that cannot be sold or donated into clean energy. This new system will be utilized to help power the Ralphs/Food 4 Less distribution center in Compton, CA.

Processing more than 55,000 tons of organic food waste into renewable energy annually, the anaerobic conversion system will successfully power the 650,000 square foot distribution center. Truck commuting will also be cut down with the new system as fewer trips will have to be made to pick up the equivalent of 150 tons of food waste per day.

"We are committed to finding solutions for food waste and clean energy, and we believe this is a meaningful step forward," said Rodney McMullen, Kroger's president and chief operating officer. "Investing in this project is a good business decision for Kroger and, most importantly, an extraordinary opportunity to benefit the environment. We want to thank Governor Brown and his team at CalRecycle and CalEPA, the City of Compton, the SCAQMD, and our partners at FEED for making this renewable energy project a reality."

The conversion process, which transforms food waste into a biogas which is then used as power, is carried out in an oxygen free environment. This assures that the process uses less space and omits no odor. The combination of this renewable energy source and the 150 zero emission fuel cell forklifts makes the Ralphs/Food 4 Less distribution center in Compton one of the greenest and most efficient centers of its kind.

Kroger
